Program Benefits
Participants with hunting licenses, fishing licenses, registrations for boats, snowmobiles, off-highway vehicles, or the new CORSAR card are considered licensed persons under Colorado law. There are significant benefits to becoming a licensed person.
- First, should a licensed person become lost or injured during a back country excursion or activity such as hiking, climbing, mountain biking, kayaking, cross-country skiing, etc., any eligible search and/or rescue expenses, incurred by law enforcement or SAR personnel during a rescue mission will be paid by the Colorado SAR Fund.
- Second, licensed persons contribute financially to a program providing funding to train and equip search and rescue volunteers throughout the state.
More Details
The administration of the Colorado Search and Rescue fund is the responsibility of the Department of Local Affairs and is managed by the department's northwestern office in Grand Junction. The fund, which was originally created in 1987 by the legislature, is designed to reimburse political subdivisions and search and rescue organizations for costs incurred in search and rescue operations and to provide funding for the purchase of related equipment and training. A 25-cent surcharge on hunting and fishing licenses, boat and off-highway vehicle (OHV) registrations and snowmobile licensing provides funding for the Search and Rescue fund.
Purchasing a CORSAR Card
Those who hike, mountain bike, cross country ski, climb and kayak can participate by purchasing a CORSAR Card. The cards are available for $3.00 per year and can be purchased through local vendors throughout the state, through regional Division of Wildlife offices, or by calling the Department
of Local Affairs at (970) 248-7310.
