RCSAR was paged out to King Solomon Falls for a male party with a possible back injury. Another King Solomon accident. Almost to the day and time of two years ago, we got the call at 16:00 for a male patient who had injured his back after jumping up at King Solomon Falls. For those of you who don't know about this area, here is a quick detail: It is up CR 129 almost to the Wyoming boarder and has a nasty side hill or no trail at times into the falls area. The walls of the canyon rise on both sides approximely 600 feet to the top. Once at the pool/falls people swim and then some jump. That's where the trouble starts. We had the great assistance of NRF and they were able to get to the patient and stabilize him. Once we arrived on scene it was determined that we would go up the ridge on the North side and call for a helicopter to pick up our patient. The patient was put in the litter and three, 300' very steep sections had to be built with a raising rope system to get the patient out and then hand carried to the awaiting helicopter. From start to finish the call was 10 hours long and the entire Search and Rescue and North Routt Fire Protection Distridatepersonnel did a fantastic job. The patient had surgery and has multiple pieces of metal hardware in his spine.
