A call came in for a 30ish year old female runner doing the Run Rabbit Run 50 mile race from the base of the ski area to Rabbit Ears monument and back. She was reported to be about 3 miles from the Long Lake aid station on the return trip. The initial report was that she was just exhausted and could no longer continue. As we left the barn and in route to staging at Dry Lake parking area, the report changed to having chest pain and a previous episode of similar complaint 3 weeks earlier at the Leadville 100. With the patient now adding the symptom of chest pain we decided to have a Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue ambulance start moving in our direction and to stage at the Summit Lake parking lot at the top of Buffalo Pass. As our team arrived at the Long Lake aid station, we were told that a "Good Samaritan" on a motorcycle had picked up our patient and went down a different trail (1101) to the Summit Lake parking lot to a personally owned vehicle. We retraced our steps and never made contact with the patient, but did confirm that she was taken down via a personally owned vehicle back to the ski base area. Even though we were not needed it was a beautiful ATV ride up Buffalo Pass road. The autumn colors were simply breathtaking.
